Our history dates back over 35 years to 1984, when Wayne Carney and his partner first started Patterson and Carney Ltd. Over the decades, the company has evolved to become Carney Battery Handling Ltd., now recognized as the worldwide leader in the development and manufacturing of critical battery room solutions and battery handling products.

The Beginning
JUNE 1984
Wayne Carney and Wayne Patterson started building their first manually powered battery changer in Wayne Carney’s garage
Patterson and Carney Ltd.
NOVEMBER 1984
After their initial launch, the two entrepreneurs quickly realized they needed more space, so they rented a 1000 sqft industrial unit and registered their company as ‘Patterson and Carney Ltd.’ Read the full story here.
Man-Aboard Transfer Cart
JULY 1985
Developed the first Man-Aboard Transfer Cart for Carling O’Keefe (now known as Molson’s). Read more here.
Bonhill Road
1986
As the business grew and needed more space, the company moved to a 3000 sqft facility on Bonhill Road in Mississauga, Ontario
A Need for More Manufacturing Space
1990 to 1996
As business boomed, Carney Battery Handling moved to a 15,000 sqft manufacturing facility in 1990, and then again in 1996 to a 50,000 sqft facility on Aimco Road in Mississauga
Carney Battery Handling Ltd.
MARCH 1991
In 1991, Wayne Carney took over the company as sole owner, renaming it ‘Carney Battery Handling Ltd.’
BT Battery Tugger
SEPTEMBER 1996
Wayne Carney designed and developed the BT Battery Tugger, which quickly became the global standard in low-volume, high-efficiency battery changing
Equal displacement on Hydraulic Lift
1998
With its continued dedication to product innovation, the company introduced equal displacement on their hydraulic lifts
Battery Bull Hydraulic – TS
DECEMBER 2001
Carney Battery Handling developed the BBH-TS, the first hydraulic three high built for Tibbet & Britten
Expansion to Europe
MARCH 2003
Carney Battery Handling started business with its first European dealer, expanding its global footprint to serve customers all across Europe
Mini Auto Changer (MAC)
APRIL 2004
The Mini Auto Changer (MAC) was developed. This was Carney Battery Handling’s first automated system for AGVs built for Miller Coors in Georgia, USA
Battery Bull Electric – TS
AUGUST 2008
The company developed its first electric three high, called the BBE-TS, for Walmart
Expansion to Australia
2009
Carney Battery Handling started business with its first Australian dealer to serve its growing customer base in Australia and New Zealand
Battery Tugger Electric (BTE)
SEPTEMBER 2011
Carney Battery Handling developed our first tugger that is 100% electric – the BTE
Carney Fabricating
JANUARY 2015
Carney Battery Handling launched the Carney Fabricating division to offer our customers comprehensive services that include design, build and installation of our wide range of custom material handling equipment
Battery Bull Electric – Fully Automated (BBE-FA)
2018
Always innovating, Carney Battery Handling developed the BBE-FA, its first fully automated battery changer for conventional lift trucks
